Yonkers Cop Indicted on Assault, False Arrest Charges
Prosecutors announced today that a Yonkers police officer has been indicted for allegedly assaulting two people in a bar while on duty and then falsely arresting them.
Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore says 32 year old Raul Ramirez of 435 Riverdale Avenue was arraigned on six charges today including 2nd Degree Assault, Offering a False Instrument for Filing, Falsifying Business Records, and Official Misconduct.
Officials say the arrest stems from an incident which took place April 12, 2010 in which Officer Ramirez was working the 12-8 a.m. shift for the Yonkers Police Department and responded to an incident at a Yonkers bar, although he was not sent there by the Yonkers police department dispatcher.
Prosecutors say once at the bar, Ramirez assaulted two people and then arrested one of them. It's alleged, in order to cover up his actions, he wrote up a false police report.
Westchester D.A. Janet DiFiore called Officer Ramirez's alleged actions an "abuse of public trust."
Ramirez was released on his own recognizance. He faces a maximum of 7 years in state prison if convicted of the top count of the indictment.
He is due back in Court February 16.
