Indian Point Three Shutting Down for Repairs

Indian Point Nuclear Power PlantsControl room operators are expected to remove the Indian Point 3 nuclear power plant in Buchanan from service tonight to repair a leak from a pipe that carries non-radioactive river water to the plant. 

According to plant owner Entergy, the river water contained in the pipe is used to cool components in the turbine building, located on the non-nuclear side of the plant.

The pipe leak is located outdoors between the river and the building that houses the rubines and generator.

Entergy did not say how long the scheduled repairs are likely to take. Indian Point's Unit 3 has been online for 163 straight days. Unit 2 has been online for 91 continuous days.

The nuclear power plants generate some 2,000 megawatts of electricity for homes,businesses and public facilties in Westchester and New York City.
