Budget Showdown Expected in Westchester

Members of the Westchester County Board of Legislators are expected to vote Friday on a budget for 2011.

Over the past week, Democrats have restored $43 million in spending that County Executive Rob Astorino had cut in his proposed budget, a move that raised the ire of Republican lawmakers.

Then, the planned budget vote date was pushed up from Monday December 13 to Friday December 10, a move the GOP asserted was a "partisan effort to manipuate the budget process" and a means to "push the new additions to the County Executive's budget through."

Before the vote, however, Democrats on the Board plan to hold a news conference Friday morning  outlining their budget priorities--what they say will be cuts to departmental spending, restoration and investments to critical services for the most in need and a fiscally responsible alternative to Astorino's budget proposal. It's a move they're promising will still maintain the County Executive's 1% reduction in the tax levy.

Last night, hundreds of people were on  hand for the final budget hearing was held last night at the County Center in White Plains.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino's proposed $1.786 billion budget plan calls for a 1% tax decrease. It would also reduce the workforce by 12%, cutting 705 positions, most through voluntary buyouts.

It also calls for the closure of  Community Mental Health clinics in Peekskill, Mount Kisco,Yonkers and Mount Vernon, several social service programs, and higher contributions for those using the County's Title XX Child Care program.
