AG's New Concern: Fire Safety at Indian Point
NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has filed a petition with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) urging it to take action against Indian Point for its failure to comply with fire safety regulations.
Last month, Schneiderman pressed the NRC to study the safety impact of storing spent nuclear fuel on the site of the Buchanan power plants. Today, Schneiderman made his latest requests in a bid he says, to "promote comprehensive, transparent and vigilant reviews" of Indian point "before decisions are made on whether to extend its operating license for another 20 years.
Schneiderman's latest letter claims Indian Point is currently in violation of established fire safety regulations, something he says "undermines the efforts to secure the reactors lying within a 50-mile radius of where more than 20 million people live, work and travel." It also cites the NRC's own fire safety concerns.
Schneiderman's petition comes as two committees of the Westchester County Board of Legislators hold the third in a series of conferences discussing safety at Indian Point. Today, officials from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observaory of Columbia University in Palisades are discussing the potential for earthquake damage to Indian Point.
